Sheet Metal of Honor Award Recipient

Some individuals shape the trade not only through the work they perform, but through the people they influence along the way. For more than fifty years, Michael P. Ryan has been one of those individuals. His career stands as a powerful example of craftsmanship, leadership, and a deep belief in the value of teaching others. SMART Sheet Metal Workers Local Union 49 proudly recognizes Mike as a 2nd Annual Sheet Metal of Honor Award recipient, celebrating a legacy that spans generations.

Mike began his journey in 1973 as a Material Handler with National Heating and Ventilating in Albuquerque. From those early days, he embraced every opportunity to learn and grow. He went on to become a Journeyman, Foreman, Estimator, Project Manager, Instructor, and Training Coordinator. His path reflected the values he carried with him throughout his life: hard work, humility, and a desire to lift others.

His career took him to companies across New Mexico, including Sheet Metal Products, Janco Sheet Metal, and JB Henderson Construction, where he served as Shop Foreman and Superintendent. Yet some of his most meaningful work took place in the classroom. As an instructor and Training Coordinator for Local 49, Mike helped shape countless apprentices into confident, capable sheet metal workers.

Mike’s influence extended even further when he joined the National Training Fund and worked alongside Ohio State University. Long before technology became commonplace in the trade, he championed AutoCAD training, digital fabrication, and computer-based learning. His vision helped modernize the industry and prepared apprentices to navigate the future with confidence.

Throughout his service, including terms as Conductor, Warden, and Chairman, Mike remained grounded in the belief that knowledge should be shared. His humility, humor, and generosity have inspired everyone fortunate enough to learn from him.
