Sheet Metal of Honor Award Recipient
For more than 30 years, the heart of SMART Sheet Metal Workers Local Union 49’s benefit programs has quietly been guided by one steady, trusted hand: Garry Willis. His work never reached for the spotlight, yet its impact is felt every single day by the members and families who rely on the security he helped build. This year, Local 49 proudly honors Garry as the 2nd Annual Sheet Metal of Honor Award recipient, a tribute to a legacy rooted in dedication, care, and deep respect for the people he served.
When Garry stepped into his role in the early 1990s, he inherited programs at a crossroads. Instead of backing away from the challenge, he committed himself fully to strengthening the 401(k) plan and transforming it into a dependable foundation for members. Because of his vision and commitment, generations of sheet metal workers have been able to look toward retirement with confidence and pride.
Garry brought that same compassion and clarity to the Health Trust Fund. He believed that members deserved more than basic coverage. They deserved stability, dignity, and access to quality care. Through shifting national trends and rising healthcare costs, Garry remained a steady protector of the fund. His financial discipline kept it strong while his heart ensured that every decision reflected what was best for members and their families.
His service extended beyond the Trust Funds. For 11 years on Local 49’s Executive Board, Garry offered calm, thoughtful leadership during times of both growth and change. He became a voice people counted on, not because he demanded trust, but because he earned it every day.
Garry Willis leaves behind more than stronger plans and improved systems. He leaves behind peace of mind. The reassurance that someone was always working quietly and tirelessly to protect your future. His legacy will continue to support Local 49 families for many years to come.
